Turn signal problem, 95 960 900

With headlamps off the Right Turn signal works correctly. The left turn signal also flashes the parking and tail lamps on the Right side. The 4-way flashers work but also flash the tail lamps. Not sure if the tail lamps should flash.

With headlamps on the left turn green arrow and the left turn lamps are on continuously with the turn signal switch in the center off position. There is no change when the turn signal switch is moved to left turn position. When signal switch is moved to right turn position the Right turn lamps flash correctly but the Left are still on not flashing. The 4-way flashers turn on but do not flash. All lamps have normal brightness and voltage at the battery with engine idling is 13.5 volts.

Any ideas whether this is a switch, ground problem or?

Tom

Check the bulb on the front. It is a twin filament and the contacts at the base of the bulb have a tendency to weld themselves together causing the turn signals to affect the parking lights and vice-versa. I would be surprized if it is any thing else.

Bob you were correct. It was the left front bulb contacts that were welded together. Corrosion caused a heat build up that melted the bulb contacts. Thank you very much for your help. This forum is great.

I too have a 95 960. Started having electrical problems and turned out to be the ignition switch. The volvo mechanic told me that the switches almost always need replacing at some point. After the new switch and about $200.00 parts and labor the problem was resolved. I would start by eliminating the easiest possibilites such as bad bulb and go from there.

Whoa there! Let me get this straight. You were charged $200 (parts and labor) for changing out an ingition switch? Let's see, parts are $60 at most, so they charged out $140 in labor..maybe two hours. I think you paid for their lunch break and the lunch. A competent volvo mechanic should be able to change and test this is less than an hour. Hell, I can do it in less than 2 hours... strikes me as a bit excessive.
