if i were going to go through the procedure i'd want new ones.what is the backlash in crank degrees of these?

Upon further consideration I did a little calculation. There are 28
teeth on the crank gear so if it was one tooth off it would be about 12.9°.
Assuming major wear of 10% of the pitch, that would give a backlash of
about 1.3° which is enough to make a slight difference in the power band
but not much assuming the cam is continuously loaded.

Are you the same Volvobub that sells a lot of parts on ebay? I have
bid on a fair number of those parts but have been beat out because I
was unable to bid at the close of the auction.

Since they are not mine, I have no way of knowing, although I did buy a used
set from the same guy a year ago. Close examination reveals wear patterns
so minor as to be undetectable except that original grinding marks are
fading in the wear areas. (About what I saw in an M410 when I had
its bearings replaced at 200k miles.)
Based on my experience with quite a few fiber gears, it's gotta be a lot
      better than any of them!

Where did you get the replacement bearings for your
        M410? I've got 3 M410s and I'm planning on taking
a couple apart to get new(ish) syncros and replacing
the bearings and putting it all together to get a
        good replacement M410.

I've read that there are replacement bearings that
involve replacing ball bearings with needle bearings.
        chris

The bearings were furnished by Maquinarias y Equipos Romero, S.A. in
          Panama over 20 years ago.
While I intend to rebuild another M410 at some future time, I have not
found (or eagerly sought) a source of replacements. Since I have a spare
tranny I thought I would change and tear the old one down first.

Sorry, I'm not much help on this one.
