Electric fan conversion questions 200

Hi guys, I was planning on doing the electrical fan conversion for my 240 within the next week or so. Dave Barton's fan conversion page seems to clear up most points, but I still have a few questions some of you guys might be able to answer.

Dave talks about using the 17" fan out of the mid-80's GM vehicles. This is a puller fan, right? He also lays out the mounting pieces and process sort of vaguely. Can anyone clarify exactly what kind of mounting hardware is used and how it is attached to the fan and radiator? Finally, he says he uses the adjustable Hayden controller. I was looking at a local auto store and they had a cheaper Hayden controller that was preset at 185 degrees. I don't remember what the normal setting is, so would this do? Thanks.

Electric fan conversion questions 200

Hi,

I used the Hayden switch you refer to and it works perfectly. I started out with the adjustable but it didn't work. I returned it for what I deemed a less likely to fail switch. I do have a toggle too to turn it on anytime.

As far as attaching the fan I used a very crude method involving long screws and dumb luck in not puncturing the radiator. I was too impatient to come up with an elegant solution so I can't really help you there.

Josh

I used a fan from a 91 Century, looked about right and works fine.

The switch is a $17 AutoZone part, which has needed a twist of the adjuster to make it work again a couple of times: I keep an eye on the thermo guage. you could do better than this, but it does work.

Electric fan conversion questions 200

Did my conversion last summer. Have not found an adequate switch yet but then have not really searched much. Original radiator. Wired the fan into the hot lead to the horns....this gave the easiest and shortest electrical hook up. Grounded to the body. This runs the fan whenever the ignition is on. Engine warms at the same rate as before in cold wether. Keeps a more steady temp in hot wether.

Don't know about the Hayden controller, but if you replace your radiator with the current style Nissens or equivalent, it comes with a temperature switch already in it, so you'd have an automatic switch to turn the fan on and off without having to invent something.
