Installing gauge cluster- need help 200 1986

I pulled a new gauge cluster from the boneyard the other day, hoping to once again have an odometer. I went to put the thing in and it didn't seem to fit. The cable wouldn't hook up- it just seemed a lot harder than it had been. I had put a tach in my wagon and i remember it being pretty straight-forward. So anyhow, i pulled the cluster from an '85 and my car is an '86. Should the cluster just hook right up? I'm sure it does... thanks guys

The '85 has a mechanical speedo and the '86 has an electrical one. Also if you have a sedan get one from a sedan and if you have a wagon get one from a wagon(wagons use a different size tire 185R14 as apposed to 185-70R-14 on the sedan.
Maybe you'll get lucky and find one with less miles.8>

The cluster may hook up. But, in 1985 the speedo is mechanical. The 1986 uses an electronic speedo. So, there may be some slight connector changes also. That might be why it doesn't seem to fit properly. Try getting a cluster from the same year as yours upto 1988. They should interchange. Be sure the speedo ratio is the same as your car. The ratio is a small number like 0.980 on your speedo. Be sure it matches to the new speedo you want to put in.

You'll need a matching electronic speedometer. The # on the center bottom of the face needs to match, it's either K9800 or K10042. A better idea would probably be to order the tiny plastic gear from this guy:

The problem is usually inside the silver metal motor cover on the side of the odometer drive. Removing that (2 phillips heads) will expose a little pinion, idler and ring gear. The idler, beige gear is what usually breaks, losign 2 or 3 teeth. This guy makes the only part I've ever found to fix it, short of tearing down every one in the 'yard looking for a good one.
