84' 245 timing belt broke, valves bent? 200 1984

I’ve got a friend who has an 84’, 245 turbo with the B21FT and while freeway driving the timing belt broke. He replaced the belt and the car runs, but his milage seems to be much less and it idles rough occasionally. His question is it likely that the valves made contact with the pistons and one of them is slightly bent or ?

thanks

George

If the belt was installed with either the intermediate or camshaft sprockets off by one tooth, there will be a 19-degree (at crankshaft) error in the timing of that shaft. (The intermediate shaft drives the distributor.) If the belt is off by one tooth on the crankshaft sprocket, both cam and dist. will be off by 19 degrees. The engine will run very roughly in any case, not just an occasionally bad idle. As said below, first step is to pull the belt cover, turn the engine until the cam sprocket mark lines up exactly with the notch behind it, and then check alignment of intermediate and crank sprockets. I've found that one of those telescoping "dental" mirrors you can find at auto parts shops is helpful in getting a straight-on view of the marks.

If you've ever seen the combustion chambers on the B21/23/230 heads, the valves don't protrude at full lift below the head's deck surface. Since the pistons are flat-topped, there's no way anything can touch.

As said before, if the one of the gears are off a tooth, it will start and idle pretty good but you will have much less power.

Pull the top Timing cover off and crank by hand to TDC and check the Marks on the Cam and intermedeite gears.

The B21FT is a non-interference engine I believe, as is the B230. Therefore, broken timing belt should not cause valve train damage.

This is a noninterference engine. After he replaced the belt was the engine timing checked? Many times people put the intermediate shaft off a tooth and
don't check the timing. Good place to start.
