how to? haynes was not much help.is there a special tool,or trick to removal of hood release cable w/housing from firewall?

You don't mention the year; they changed the release in 1990 I believe. I've done this before but it was a long time ago and on a pre-90 240, and Philvo's description doesn't elicit any deja vu, so I wonder if you guys are talking about the release with the lever or the white knob.

What I do remember is the firewall retainer for the white knob version is a snap in device where the fingers of the plastic grommet must be carefully released from the firewall hole or they will break. Then, the hole is large enough to withdraw the cable and its end hook back into the cabin.

Disconnect the pull handle and then pull the cable thru the firewall from the engine bay.The rubber grommet will pop right off.
