Installing oil pump driveshaft 700

I am slowly assembling my rebuilt '84 B23FT and the other day I installed my oil pump drive shaft. I lubed it up with motor oil and tried to drop it into the bushing in the block. It didn't drop in as expected, so I tried to push it gently, which didn't really work either. Finally I tapped it (not too hard) with a wooden mallet, using a dowel once it got down inside the block. Once it was in it spun freely and seems to be just fine. I was just wondering if this bit of resistance I encountered was normal and if I dealt with it in the appropriate manner. I hope I did anyway ;)

Thanks,

Matthew

Well, I've never installed this; however, the running clearance is most likely only a mil or two (0.001 - 0.002"). You should be able to find a spec for it in the manual. If during the fit up, the shaft were slightly cocked, it wouldn't drop in. Wiggling it may have done for you. There should be little to no slop in the shaft when you try to wiggle it once its installed. Since it turns freely, your probably OK. Good luck.
