Fellow Brickers,
My worst fears have come true. My wife called last Thursday to say that she crunched the front end of my beloved 89 240 DL sedan. Good news: she was fine. Bad news: insurance company totaled it. They stopped adding up parts at around 3600.
It looks like I will need a passenger side front fender (or a lot of putty) and the whole deal around the passenger side headlight assembly.
I bought her back for $200 and will attempt to bring her back to life. Any references for good salvaged parts near Rochester New York would be appreciated. Some of guys at the salvage yards I have tried to deal with have been jerks.
Oh well, nothing lasts forever, right?

i would suggest that you buy a volvo 240 off ebay. look for one with a bad engine or a damaged rear(as long as it has good front parts). then you strip the one off ebay and fix yours you also got extra parts just incase something in yours breaks.

that is rough 2old. lucky she was in a brick, man - there is a place here in central vermont called the Wyre Wheel. These guys only deal in foreign cars and at one point they were the largest dealer of used foreign parts in new england (not sure of their standing now). Anyway, their number is 802-388-9866 and I know they will ship to just about anywhere. good luck

Just noticed there's an ad for parts cars, in NY, right here on the Board:

If you can't find what you need at a reasonable price, call Mark at Eurocars Plus, (860) 444-2001, or call The Autowerkes (860) 443-1066. They're both parting 240's presently, in eastern CT. Bit of a drive for you but both should be reasonable and good people to deal with. You can stop off at FCP Groton too- they're a stone's throw from Eurocars (same road!)
Good luck with it!

In addition to what others have suggested, you might take a look at Ebay. Right now, as we speak, there is a 89 240 in the junk cars section of parts. Actually, this one looks too good to junk, you might be close enough to check it out. A couple months back a 90 wagon with a blown engine went for less than $300. Seems like the northeast is where these things are.

That's the problem with salvage yards--a lot of them want top buck for crappy, dented parts. Try a body shop who deals in a lot of Volvos. They usually have tons of parts leftover. There are so many 240 parts cars, the problem though is finding a GOOD parts car. Without dents in every panel. You can always see if you can still get used parts. Don't know about 240 quarters but often the Koreans have put together some pretty inexpensive but decent pieces.
Or you could probably see if the local dealer will give you a break on a new quarter. Sometimes their prices aren't that bad on stuff like that, despite what you might think.
You might want to have a shop line up the car, or measure the front end yourself. They get knocked out with really little impact.
Just some thoughts.... speaking from body shop experience.

There are 4 salvage yards nearby my little village, three of them salvage for parts and always want top $$$, however, one of them is basically a recycler and let you pick your own stuff, they end up stripping the cars for their metal. Other places wanted $100+ for a seat, these guys wanted $20. Look for a recycler. Best of luck!

2OV: I can certainly sympathize, mon ami. My former wife (thought she was Nuvolari, reincarnated) managed somehow to spin our 240 on I-90 here in Cleveland....went head-on into the center concrete divider, spun 180, ass-ended the car on the wall, did another 90 and put the whole drivers' side into oblivion. Short of the Cibie headlights, there really wasn't anything I could salvage off of the body of the Swede. It was gone the next day. As a tribute to the car, though, she and the cat walked away without so much as a 'howdy-do.' Anyway, I digress. If you're willing to take the drive, Carl Drennan's place here in Rootstown, near Cleveland, is a treasure trove of used parts. I think you might contact him at volvocarl@aol.com. DO NOT attempt to get him on Sunday. I'm sorry I don't have the phone number, but I think he's in the book. I can get you more info if you're interested. Good hunting.

Erie Volvo might be a good bet-- I used to live in Rochester and never had much luck with the local boneyards...
