740 power window not stopping at top 700 1989

Hi
My power window drivers side does not stop at the top anymore. It trys to drive the last 1/4 inch and bends the big geared arm and makes a hell of a "scrunk" noise. I removed door panel and checked all nuts for being tight etc. I lubricated all moving parts and put back together before I froze. I live in Maine and the garage is full so this was an outside operation. It is like the stop switch needs adjusting. I could not figure out how the motor knows to stop turning. If this continues it will destroy the gears. Can anybody help me solve the problem. Thanks in advance STeve

Thanks for the input. I was wondering if it could be adjusted to close befor it engages the last tooth. There was something perculiar the way it closed for months before. Sometimes there would be a windnoise thru the weatherstripping
right next to my ear and sometimes on short trips it was ok. Is the regulater unique to left or right or does one fit both sides.

The regulators are unique for each door however the regulators are similar between many consecutive production years. Although the regulators may look different between years as Aye Roll suggests, I have seen two types - one that uses a metal body(the big plate like thing that the motor attaches to) and one that uses a thick plastic body. Each of the above types of regulator may mount differently to the door using 3 or 4 bolts but your door should have mounting holes pre drilled for both regulator configurations.

I had the same problem as you in that the window leaned forward leaving a gap right by the ear letting in noise. For sure - replace the regulator (preferably with a metal body type from a junkyard car) and all will be better. In my case, the gear was bad and I think that it was possible that the rivet holding the the 2 lift arm pieces together had developed some play over the years causing the window to drop giving you the problems that you discribe.

For the time being, as Rob stated, just push the window up into place and "keep everything together by not opening the window and you should be good until you make the replacement.

      Hope this helps,

      Tim

740 driver's window regulators should have thier own forum. They all have troubles like this. Nothing stops the motor. It just runs into the top stop, and tightens up against the window seal, or if it's bent the arm fouls the motor mounting plate in the regulator. Every one in the junkyards is gone, becasue they go bad so often. The replacement one is better, but doesn't look anything like the original. It's mostly plastic.
There are some adjustments possible by sliding the motor and regulator around in the mounting holes in the doors. You should be able to get it to at least seal up fairly well, but sometimes you can't adjust them enough to avoid a gap. Keep it together and save your $$ for a replacement regulator.

I have had this exact problem. More than likely ou need a new regulator. The gear is worn on the last gear tooth and it is causing the regulator to make a nasty racket & wear out further gears (ie causes a popping sound) - The motor won't stop properly.

In my case the front part of the driver window was the part that sagged and leaned forward leaving a gap (it looked like the lift arm was lazy on one side) if you follow what I am trying to poorly discribe. Only after getting a junk yard replacement fixed the problem.

    Good Luck,

    Tim
