LHD & RHD alternator mounts - update 140-160

After exhaustive research on this issue, I've discovered the following:

1] If using a stock Bosch or Motorola/SEV alternator, mounting on the left side of the block will indeed interfere with the steering box.

2] Left-of-block mounting *might* work if one used a modern, tiny alternator, say, out of a small Japanese car. My budget does not allow for such experimentation.

3] the bolt through which the main alternator bolt passes goes through two tabs on the right-of-block bracket, and only one on the left-of-block bracket. I would believe that to be a significant drawback, although it has obviously worked on thousands of RHD cars.

4] It certainly is feasable to fabricate a mount that would bolt to the same bosses that the left-of-block bracket uses, but place the alternator itself 25-40mm higher, thus alleviating the steering box interference. I however, lack such fabrication skills and equipment.

5] Until I can find a picture of the a/c compressor mount for LHD B20, I can't say if/how that might be used for an alternator instead.

6] For now, I am stuck with the alternator mounted to the right of the block.

LHD & RHD alternator mounts - update 140-160

    Hi

I went on the brickboard website for the first time today to and saw both your discussions about the RHD alternator mount. Maybe I can help you out with your problem. I used to live in the UK and took my beloved RHD144 back to the Netherlands. I go over to the UK quite often and started to collect RHD spec. stuff as this can (in case of a breakdown) not be found over here in the Netherlands. This stuff includes the bracket you are looking for and I can sell it to you for a fair price. (however I don’t have the tensioner arm but I can get that for you on my next trip to London in March)

However with this setup you cannot run AC on the car which is my little project on my 144. I want an AC setup and got most parts from a US import car that was parted out. Can make a pic of the compressor bracket if you want…

To install the AC setup I need to take my alternator from the LH side to th RH side which wouldn’t be a problem (predrilled hole) if it wasn’t for the steering box. Even with a very short belt the alternator will bang the steering box.

There is a AC supplemenary kit which is a alternator tensioning pulley and bracket that I am looking for. Maybe you have a pic of it as quite a few Aussies responded to your discussion. I am also interested in the rest of your research results and pics.

I will open a new discussion to find this part and if you still need the bracket you can contact me on siewers@usa.net

My guess would be that if you could find an AC bracket for a B20 you could add to it what you would need for an alternator. I recently put a new AC compressor (non stock, Sandon 508) on my 71 142 using the old bracket and making an adaptor plate. I have a welder and torch along with a grinder to do rough fabrications for projects like this. You might be able to make a bracket from scratch using the 3 or so tapped holes in the block utilized by the AC bracket.

Anyone out there have a spare AC bracket? I have another AC job to do.

    Does this help?

Well, it sort of helps but mostly not. To put my alternator where I want it requires:

      a] a bracket I don't have
b] fabrication tools and skills I don't have.

      I think I'm stuck.
