Need help. New owner 200

Just bought my first Volvo: an 86 240DL (white 4-door). There are a couple things wrong with it, things I would like to get done ASAP.

1: I have no power steering because the fluid leaks straight out of the PS rack. Is this a bad rack, or are there just some bad seals or plugs or something?

2: Not quite as important, but my wiper nozzles don't spray and that bugs me. Looks like there's plenty of cleaner in the resevior so I'm guessing it's a bad pump or something. Is hard to fix or replace?

3: My driver's seat is in bad shape. It's drivable-in, and I'm pretty sure the lumbar support is inoperable (didn't look into it much), but what bugs me is it looks like the upper half was pulled backward and snapped. Is this fixable, or would there be welding involved? Would I be able to remove the covering and inspect it?

4: The odometer stopped and I didn't even notice it till I took the car home (previous owner didn't bother mentioning it). I understand there's a gear back there, but I have been told it's probably best to just get another odometer. What would replacing it entail? Lot of work, or just sort of 'plug-and-play?' Also, can the odometer be set? This one quit at 204,XXX miles, so I really have no idea what it should be at now.

That seems to be it for now... there are a bunch of other things that don't work but those don't bother me as much.

    (1) dido on the rack, while your at it don't forget the tie rod ends,

    (2) before you replace the pump ($30 - $40 ), pull the supply hose from the nozzle to make sure your the pump is really bad. Sometimes the nozzles themself will plug up ($2 - $4) and not let the fluid spray. The pump motor can run and the and the pump mechanism can be bad. Check the complete system before you buy parts. Many little non-expensive things to go wrong here.

    (3)
Three possibles here. Frame is sprung, not a biggy, lots of cheap frames around. Lumbar support is broken, also lots of thoese parts. Cushion is bad, this getting to be common on the 240's because of there age. Also about $385 for a set from IPD. I bought a set of seats from Ebay, took the cushions out and put them in my seats, then threw the rest out. Cost about $75 for the two seats. Not a big thing to pull the seats apart to see what wrong. Takes about an hour per seat.

    (4) Go with the gear fix. It's cheaper, lasts longer. Also, like he says, don't reset the odom when vehicle is in motion.

Hi, Anthony, just read your problems, I think OTY seemed to already help you out pretty well (good advice :-) ). I just wanted to mention to you that you might be able just to reatach the odometer cable w/out even screwing it back on (thats if it doesn't). I went to a volvo shop and the mechanic told me that you could at least do it temporarily. I hope you enjoy your 240! StreetAngel21. --btw-- thx. OTY for mentioning not to clear tripometer when driving the car, i hope i haven't screwed anything up by doing it all this time.

    I'll let the others try and tackle #1 & #3... But for #2 & #4:

#2 - I had the same problem with my washer pump a few weeks ago. The fix is easy. Gently pull off the hoses connected to the pump and use a pencil or something to plug them or else you'll lose all of your fluid. The pump is attached to two notches on the side of the fluid tank, just pull it off carefully.

You'll see four bolts on the bottom of the pump. Remove them. You'll notice a circular disc that has probably seized. Spin it around with your finger a few times. And if you have some oil, lube it. Put it all back together, and the pump should work.

#4 - For your odometer, there's a small plastic "tooth" gear. Once a tooth gets stripped off, the odometer will not turn anymore. You can buy a replacement gear for $29/shipped. Visit my website below and click on the "Odometer Repair" link on my page. Installation is fairly simple. Just because you buy a replacement speedohead doesn't necessarily mean it will have a working gear. Stick with the unit you have and replace the gear.

I did this thing with the 4 screws and my disc dealie was seized, but it didn't work afterward. I didn't put the hood down all the way when I tried it (the nozzles were pointed at the windshield though) but I doubt that has anythign to do with it. I suppose it could be the nozzles.

#1. Get a rebuilt rack, various suppliers have them, check warranty.

#2. Who knows, does the pump work?

#3. Don't know about the bending back part, but the lumbar support pieces are like 10 or 15 bucks from a place like RPR.

#4. Used pod or get it fixed, either works.

    #5. Good luck.
