Wife's '91 744 turbo needed snow tires. Being the good husband that I am, I went out and got a set of Virgos (240 15" turbo alloy rims) and a brand new set of Toyo Observe G2's. Go to put them on today and they're hitting on the brake calipers. I knew there would be an issue if the car had ABS but this car does not. So who has put Virgos on their 740? Is there any way to make this work? Maybe a little creative angle grinder action on the calipers? Or do I need to go out and buy another (!) set of rims?

That sucks man :( Those Toyos are supposed to be REAL good snow tires too. My Volvo mechanic recommends them to just about everyone. My friend's dad put them on their '96 Acura TL and '93 Saturn and he says they're great tires. Don't know what to tell you about the rims. Aren't those Virgos hard to find in good shape? You shouldn't have a hard time selling then to a 240 owner. I have '88 760 rims for my 745 for the winter. I think thy're called 'Omega'. Great Volvo winter rim. They give the car a classy look while my Hydras give it a sporty look in the summer. Hope you don't have a hard time finding another set of rims for a good price.........

Just to add to your dilemma, the 15" 700 Turbo 5 spoke rims (I don't know Volvo's name for these) have a reputation for not being the strongest Volvo made - something about the alloy composition and the combination of forces where the spokes meet the circumference. I'll sell you mine, but you'd have to sign a liability waiver. What about finding some FWD rims and using spacers?

I had the same problem when I bought my '90 745ti. I wanted to fit the 240 5-spoke alloys to my car but experienced interference with the calipers. Not sure what you can do, but I know that the 740 5 spoke alloys are somewhat different. And, I don't think that my car has the so-called "big brakes" (11.25" front rotors). Good luck, but I think you won't be able to fit the Virgos on a 740.

Definitely the big calipers on the '91. You can't use the 240 wheels.

Well goshdarnit! I thought I'd researched this out but never came upon any information about big calipers. Anyone want to trade some wheels that will fit for a nice set of Virgos? Maybe I should just buy another 240 to put them on ;-)

I bought new steel rims for $39 each with free shipping from tires.com for my '89 760T and put Nokian Hakkapalittas (?) on them. Wheels are black and ugly, but they fit just fine.

Some of the 700 cars are equipped with the so called "Big Brakes" (larger rotors). Could that be the source of your problem?

240 rims have different offsets than 700/940 rims and will not fit without the use of spacer washers behind the rim.

The offset is not the reason why it doesn't fit. The Virgo wheel on the 740/940 is a particular case that does not fit. Most other wheels with a 20mm offset will fit.

Stock offset for the 740 is 25mm, for the 240 it is 20mm. So the 240 rims will actually sit further out on a 740.
