Remote Starter - Tach Wire 700 1991

Anyone install a remote starter in their 740? Where do you hook up the Tach Signal Wire? My install manual, a past post, and wiring diagram show I should hook it to the negative side of the coil ( red & white wire ). When I test that wire for AC voltage as the installation manual states - it reads about 20+ V AC instead of 1V to 6V AC. Does that matter?

Just installed a Bulldog remote start in my 87 760. Went tachless and have had no problems. That is supposed to be the factory setting for the unit.
