"Sputter" is a bit general of a description, and could be caused by many things, but an obstructed exhaust will cause the engine to hesitate and perhaps run rough, particularly when you are already pulling and you add more gas pedal to try to get more. The symptoms will vary depending on how aggresive the cam is (how much overlap between exhaust and intake).

Put your hand at the exhaust pipe opening while the car is idling. If you can feel the individual bursts of exhaust easily, then the exhaust is not obstructed.
