I am the very proud(?) owner of my'90 740GL wagon..i am eagerly desireing any and all comments ,cautions ,opinions ,suggestions...etc.. please let me know everything... the car seems to be in very good condition, 1 owner ,163000MI,4spd atm w/disengage switch, 2.3L engine y' all know the rest.. is there anything i should know ?? please!!!thank you

start at the begining of the faq's read until the end.,...then action, also watch the posts on here for a month...you will know more than most mechanics after about a week....(unless they are volvo specialists...)

In the FAQ, two sections will get you started: "Buying Used" and "High Mileage Preventive maintenance". Get any and all repair receipts and records from the prior owner to find out what was done.

You just bought Volvo's best! IMO the 740 is the Volvo of choice. It has refinements not found in earlier cars, and it is still a very functional RWD. I could rant about the "new market" Volvo has entered with all the "S" cars, but don't get me started. The only concern I would have about your 740 is that you may have bought a 16 valve engine (B234) which needs much more attention than the Volvo standard engine (8 valve). The B234 is a good spunky machine, but tends to eat itself over time. If you are unfamiliar with the looks of a Volvo engine, take your car to someone that knows the difference. If in fact you have a 16 valve, be very careful to follow factory maintenance recommendations, particularly in regard to timing belts. You'll love your 740!

16-valves only appeared on '89-91 (92 in some markets) 740 and 940 GLEs. GLs had 8-valves.
