760 Turbo Smoker 700

I'm looking at '89 760 turbo wagon. It has 210k miles, auto trany, power everything. My main concern is the turbo. It appears that it is leaking oil (blue smoke from tail pipe).
1. How much should I expect to pay for a new turbo (U.S.) ?
2. How can I clean the intercooler.
3. Any other items I am forgeting?

Thanks,
Rick

If the turbo is indeed dying (and the blue smoke isn't the result of bad rings or something else) you can probably get a rebuilt one (all rebuilds, rarely if ever new) and get it installed for like... $1200? However, I would recommend that before you buy this vehicle you get a compression test done to make sure the engine is sound. Additionally, this will be crucial if you plan to put a rebuilt turbo on (it will have to be able to handle the turbo).

You can empty any oil in the intercooler via the drain spout on the bottom of it. Anything more than 2-3 tablespoons is excessive. You can also just unscrew the arms that pin it down, undo the hoses, and pull the intercooler completely to clean it on a bench.

As for additional items I would note that you may need an entirely new exhaust system. If this thing has been throwing oil for awhile the cat is likely shot, and the exhaust system is probably pretty nasty as well.

    good luck,
    rt

I can confirm this, I bought an unseen 745 TIC on e-Bay for 150 bucks and it had been pushing oil into the airbox due to a blocked oilbox. I cleaned out the oilbox, all hoses, the intercooler and the airbox and no more smoke. I know however that my turbo hoses are now pretty rotten and I suspect at least parts of my exhaust will need replacing in due course. I am having my turbo rebuilt just in case. Might be worth checking that oilbox, but do indeed do a compression test first.

also check the large rubber hoses on the turbo system...if its been oiling for a while they will rot out from the inside and are mucho expensive (several hundred $!)

as to a rebuilt turbo im having one done right now and its going to cost me about £700 (circa $1000) thats complete rebuild on turbo inc new shaft & vanes, new oil pipes (not strictly neccessary but..) oil (mobil 1 0w40 of course) and labour...

Having said that im getting a good deal due to relatives in the trade (not super good ...just not ripped!)
