Cold Power , Warm not so much 200

okay, so looking for some feedback. You guys rock so i figured this is the best place to inquire.
Got my 87 244DL a couple of months. Have been content with the moderate performance of the car. Weather has been fairly temperate. Recently. last week or so, temp outdoors has dropped to -20,-30 F with wind chill. Here's what happens on the first start of the day...
1. Turns over and starts right away (cool)
2. Revs high for about 1 1/2 minutes (still in park)
3. then drops way down and for the next minute varies from sputter and shake to auto-rev(high), ... sputter, auto-rev, ... (still in park)
4. finally settles to a perfect idle
5. pull out and for the first 3-4 minutes of driving the accel pedal is really loose and the engine revs really high before switching gears (ie. out to first stop light, doing 40mph, still in 2nd gear revving high)(no tach, judging by sound), ... i'm guessing this is due to the cable sticking, ... (solution, ... oil it?)

anyway, finally, the cable comes alive again, (i guess), have normal tighter accel pedal, tranny shifts normally ... but man do i have what seems like a lot of additional torque. I can take off from a light and hit 50 in about 4 seconds. (remember this is NOT a turbo). After about 10 minutes of driving, ... she's back to normal, still great power and steady driving but it just feels like i have an immense surge of power until the engine really warms up.

if this is just a bonus, oh well, ... but if this is in an indication of something that needs to be checked/tweaked, to keep consistent even after the engine warms up i'd like to know. Until now, like i said, i was happy with the performance of the car ehwn i bought it, but i didn't know it could have this extra boost. Would like to know if it something that should have been there in the first place. Thank you so much in advance for your suggestions.

Since no one else has addressed your question, I will speculate on what is happening.
Idea 1: The air box thermostat is stuck so you get hot air all the time. This wilimit power when the engine is warm. See posts above on AMM questions.
Idea 2: The air/fuel mixture is not adjusted correctly and other mechanical/ electrical problems cause the mixture to pass through the best power range as the engine warms up. I way be way off on this idea.

thanks for taking the time to respond. Electrically everything seems fine. I think I'll just do a general tune up (plugs, wires, etc, ...) but I do think I'll also take a look at the air box thermostat. Thanks for the suggestion, you probably hit it right on the nose. A fairly simple thing that I overlooked.

I did notice yesterday, warmer temps up around 28 F, that i wasn't getting the "boost" i noticed last week.

Thanks again
