sounds like your speedo drive gear may be on it's way to Valhalla. I suggest you go to the brickboard speedo gear threads to follow access instructions...not difficult...only 10 mins to get in there from the driver's seat. then liberally dress the nylon gears with vaseline...should make things last a lot longer..even in cold weather, and yes, even in Brooklyn...good luck - DJ

My 84 is doing the same thing. Once temperatures get above 20 it's fine. Your's should be too. If it continues after it warms up, replace the speedo cable.
It too nasty cold for anything here in Northwestern Ohio. Even fixing thing breaking from the cold. This is why Humans shouldn't live in cold environments!

I'm with ya' on that one ! It is too Ballbusting cold to do anything on the car unless it is a no-start emergency & I like to do my maintainance/repairs early fall/late spring when the temprature is just right! Just hope the temp can climb up into the 30's by beginning of Feb. as my oil change is due.

When was the last time you changed the speedometer cable? The cable can make alot of noise too, since it is spinning really fast, even at 15mph. If the odometer still works then it's not a broken gear. My '84 was noisy and the speedometer would fluctuate a bit when driving, I replaced the cable and it is back to quite and accurate. If you do this, make sure you put the seal back on too!! or else your tranny will leak. Ummm...no...that didn't happen to me. hehe.
