140 Volvo Parts Availablity... 140-160

I stopped by a large and reputable Volvo dealer yesterday. Prognosis on 140 parts availability is not so good, Hopefully, it is not so bad.

I wanted brake caliper rebuild kits. NLA No Longer Available. Remanufactured calipers available at approx $110/pop, not including core charge. Turns out NAPA has caliper rebuild parts so for about $64, I ordered a complete set of caliper piston seals and dust boots.

Flex brake hoses (6 total required) are about $35-$40/pop at Volvo, and only a bit less at NAPA. --Fortunately, on looking more closely, my ATE flex hoses are in excellent shape. It was the undercoating overspray that made 'em look nasty and cracked. I'll give 'em a good cleaning and then shmeer 'em up with silicone grease to help prevent ozone attack.

Large molded rubber hose between filler neck and gas tank, NLA at Volvo. I'll have to start scrounging the used Volvo parts places. If any of you have a spare gas tank fill hose for a '70 145, give me a shout at adheurle@accessbee.com. Maybe NAPA has some kind of generic gas rated large diameter flex hose, I'll have to ask.

B20 cam gear only available in steel any more at Volvo. Only purchasable as a set of gears at $233.20. I think I'll hold off on that one.

I've tried a couple of times to contact the folks at Swedish Engineering be website and by e-mail. Don't know what is up with them. Maybe you have to call?

Parts availablility for old Volvo is a bit slim at IPD.

Can you recommend any other sources?

Appreciate your help !

Later,
Al

As for the cam gears...Napa have aluminum ones sold as a set for around $160.00. Teh racers like to use them because of their light weight.

Napa ntp - 8 - 20325 is the part number.

Yea...gotta scrounge a bit more these days... but regarding your specifics...

For teh calipers...they last almost forever it seems. I'd go with professionally rebuilt ones if the price difference is only $50 each. Of course, if that rebuild kit covers both sides, that shoudl be fine too. My experience with rebuilding them is not so good though...

For the flex brake lines... The fittings should be fairly standard, and there are companies that will custom make brake hoses for you. You just give 'em your old ones for size and fitting comparisons, and they make 'em to suit. Even in aircraft grade braided stainless for not too much more more...

The molded rubber gas tank hose... See if you can get the guy at the parts store to show you what he has available for American cars. Good chance you can find one thats all twisted up like a banana that is long... find one with a similar bend somewhere, and cut it down to size.

You can also get off teh shelf hosery that is flexible... that would probably work too.

Timing gear set in steel from Volvo for $233? Geez... I'd jump on that if I were you. The last fiber set I bought from Volvo was approching $200... the steel gears will never fail. And they won't be available for long.

ANother good way to source NLA parts... get the original part number from the dealer. Then just do a google search for "volvo" and the part number. Usually turns up lots of stuff...

Good luck with it!
-Matt

Al, sounds like your having fun. I just got done with doing my brakes on my 142 so I'll share what I did. For the front calipers I found a set of rebuild 164 rotors on ebay for 25 bucks (lucky find) and already had the vented rotors so they went on fine. For the rears I had girlings that were froze up and I couldn't get the pistons out so they got srapped. Went to the junkyard and pulled of some rears on a 240, all you have to do is drill out the mount holes to fit the OE bolts. I got the rebuild kits from a import shop in town for 16 bucks for both. All the usual parts stores wanted 20 each side. For the rebuild kits I wouldn't recomend a dealer you can try the shop I went to they're called Bartosh Imports in Vancouver WA there phone # is(360)695-2243 also if they can't help "The Source" for brake stuff is Complete Brake Service INC. in Columbus OH they have anything you need I originally bought my front caliper rebuild kits from him for 42 bucks including shipping I'd sell them to you but I want to keep them around just in case, so there phone # is (614)221-4888. And on to the lines, yes I still have not sorted those out fully but there out there. I'd check ebay first but if no luck I got my rear 2 line from IPD they have steel braided lines for the rears for like 50 bucks. The fronts were a bit tricky, since the fittings are soft on the soft lines I stripped my new ones that I got at the dealer (thankfully with my dads employee discount) within a few times of tinkering with them and decided to go in search of steel braided lines. I bought 4 24" lines of -4 with AN fittings on them for 52 bucks on ebay, in order to convert AN to metric fittings that cost about another 40 bucks in Earls brand fittings from my local race store or Aeroquip. So thats where I'm at, I have all the fittings and now am just waiting for the lines in the post. My advice is to not get in a hurry, try new resources and always ask advice on how to do the job a different way, my 142 is also my project rally car and technically the lines up front aren't DOT approved and it isn't my daily driver so decide accordingly.

Aaron

Go back and read the ads in Rolling Mag.
Don't believe everything the dealer tells you.
Do a search on Volvo on ebay. (You might want to develop your
own search string to filter out the chaff.)
Check with those who advertise here, at IPD, Hemming's Motor News, etc

Remember that the Volvo Dealer would MUCH rather sell you a new
car than low-margin parts and he will DEFINITELY make it worth his
while on those he does deign to furnish.

140 parts are no harder to find than 122 or 1800 parts.
You just gotta look in the right places and they usually
do NOT include NAPA or the dealer.

BTW I'm driving a 69 164 and not having serious problems getting
normal parts as long as I'm not in too much of a hurry.

Here are a couple of resources:

http://www.revolvstore.com/

I bought a fender for $75 plus shipping for a 142 that was clean. They are in Tucson so it would stand to reason they should have non rusted parts. I just priced a steering wheel, four spoke for a 72-? from them-$50. Anyone got one they want to get rid of?

http://www.roundfender.org/pages/363780/index.htm

I bought door weather stripping and the wiper thing against the glass from them. Not sure what else they have.

Hope this helps-
