Driver's side rear seat carpet wet 700 1988

Hi,

I've discovered a VERY wet carpet, but only in the left-side passenger area. Every thing else is dry. I did the dollar carwash yesterday with the spray wand about an hour before I discovered it so I don't know if it had been wet before or has been since I bought it a week ago.

I have noticed the lower moulding on left quarterpanel glass is pulling out and exposing about a two inch gap at the lower front edge. If It were coming through here I'd expect the carpet and insulation under the seat to be wet but flipping the seat up showed everything dry. Except that is for a plastic cup (stopper or plug) that had 1/8" foul liquid in it.

The FAQ dealt primarily with windshield leaks.

I have to say I'm amazed at how clear and clean all the drains are in the doors and rocker panels. They look like the car came from Arizona, not Pennsylvania.

Any advice on where to look is greatly appreciated.

Love this car!

Pull up trim and carpet in the driver's footwell and find water tracks to the back. One place you want to examine carefully is a large (4 inch x 4 inch) black plastic plug covering a ventilation hole left of where you would rest your left foot. If it is leaking, a new rubber gasket (or sealant) will take care of that.

Thanks,

I pulled up the carpet and kick panel as you suggested and there's no trace of water higher than the plug. Of course the plug's dry now but the discoloration under it and leading to the floor indicate that's where water is getting in. I also reached up between the carpet and steel floor under the pedals and it was completely dry there. Looks like I'll be pulling the carpet out to dry which means gutting the car.

Thanks, I'll look into that this week. Last time I had a leaky vehicle, Ford Bronco, it took forever to dry things out. Come to think of it, my wife's Caravan started dumping water into the passenger compartment awhile back. Again, took forever to dry things out.

Regards,
