Flywheel Sensor 700

Hi all:

I think I posted this message originally into the wrong forum. I'll try it here. I have a screw in Sensor on the Engine of my 1986 740 Turbo Wagon with the M46 4 speed & OD. This sensor detects 2 dimples on the Flywheels front face. It's located on the right side of the Flywheel Casting at the 9 O'Clock postion, and screws into a tapped hole. I thought the Hall Sensor in the Distributor detects RPM, what does this sensor do? When my Thrust Bearing failed on the old Engine, the Flywheel dimples wiped out this Sensor. What do I ask for when replacing? Where's a good place to buy?

Thanks
Warren

That was for a Volvo dealer tool for checking the timing, and refered to as something like a timing readout meter pick up. The two pins were refered to as the timing readout pin set. You don't need to replace the damaged part unless you want to have the timing checked with that specific tool at the Volvo dealer. You will note it makes no electrical connection to the car. There is a connector attached under one of the acorn nuts which holds the cam cover down.

I'd be glad to sell you a used one if you really wanted. It will never be needed on our cars.

Thanks John:

Again you helped me out. Phew!! I couldn't find an answer to this question anywhere. I even asked a Volvo guy. You're a wealth of knowledge. If I don't need it, and you don't use it, I'll leave it out. That's good enough for me.

Thanks
Warren

You are welcome, but I don't even remember helping you out in the past. The answer comes from having a good memory for one of abe crombie's posts.
