During the recent cold spell here in the northeast, my V90 has really begun to groan and creak, especially loud from the rear. It happens on the city streets that aren't in great shape. It does seem to subside as the car is driven, but mostly as it warms up outside. Today is in the thirties so I will see what happens this morning.

My immediate thought was these fiberglass leaf springs get wacky when cold. My mechanic friend in Illinois suggested that his also creak a bit during winter. This however is not, in my opinion, just a 'little creaking.' It is loud and something I would not expect from a car of this price range. Any other items I should look for the next time it's up on the lift?

I have had creaks and thumps develop on my '96 965. I initially thought it was the tail gate. However a hint on this brickboad got me to check the tighness of the bolts that mount the rear suspension assembly to the body.

I was able to get as much as a 1/2 turn on a couple of the bolts that attach the brackets to the body back there. The noise went away. (I don't understand why they weren't welded in there in the first place.)

Now at almost 100,000 miles the front rubber bushings are failing so they will get replaced once it warms up here in New England. Even though we've had some near 0F temperatures I haven't heard any noise that I would think was caused by the composite spring.

I remember Rich K from Fairfax telling me he always gives the rear suspension bolts a 1/2 - 1/4 turn to snug them up. I've done it once. Maybe Shatz's car has a loose bolt. The shocks could be loose too.

My wife hasn't reported any funny noises in her 965. Believe me, she would report that pretty quickly since she thinks the car is falling apart. Broken cupholder, heated mirror not heating and missing seat control 'icon'. Now that's falling apart! ;>)

Maybe you could have someone bounce the back of the car up and down while you watch and listen.

Both cars need oil changes and since the weather will be warmer around here, I'll do that this weekend.

Mine love's scrub the car along the bushes on her way out of the driveway. Sometime to point of folding the mirror back.
