replacement door source in Scotland

HI everyone.
I need a rear offside door for my 86 740 estate. The present one has
succumbed totally to rust, door skin is paper thin, bottom frame has rusted
out and the only thing holding it together is the plastic inner.
Anyone know of a scrappy in the Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh, Falkirk
area that would have a 740 or two lying about ????
Also, any ideas on the best way to take off and put on a whole door?
specifically, what is the best way to undo the bolts? On the body frame or
from the inside of the door with inner panels removed? The hinge seems to be
good. P.S. colour of door not too important, but if it's dark blue/green :)
P.P.S. Is a Saloon body door the same size? I have a 740 SE Saloon sitting doing nothing but it has electric rear windows whilst the estate does not. Could I swap the doors?

Cheers Stuart.

Sorry, no leads for Scotland.

Taking the hinges off at the pillar (ie. unbolting the hinge from the car) is definately easiest: pull the doorframe U-profile rubber off, remove the B-pillar trim piece, and you have a clear shot at the bolts rather than having to remove the trim from the door and then having to reach inside and work blind. If you're alone this also allows you to keep the door shut while working and opening/lifting it off once all the bolts are out.

Yes, doors are the same between the saloon (sedan) and estate (wagon). Doors did change with the introduction of SIPS and those late doors do not interchange directly with early doors although as with anything Volvo it can probably be made to fit with a bit of work.

Being more familiar with the 940 series I know those have the wiring for the rear power windows in the main harness, so you could just plug in the door, put a 4-way control panel in the driver door and have 3-way power windows! Not sure about the 740, but you might be in luck, I think the conversion kits only came with the door harness. Or change the window mechanism.

Thanks for that Bram. Mebbe I should change all 4 doors and have a two tone Volvo !!!! with all electric windows, if I have the wiring for it !!! Cheers !!! I'm thinking of going to a car auction and picking up a cheap estate and transplant what I want to that, my 85 estate is getting very rusty :(

Hey, go for it! With the state of the used car market as it is in the UK, I wouldn't think twice about picking something up from auction. If it wasn't for that pesky water between you and me I'd be scouring the auctions for parts cars. Come to think of it, I really should check what the tunnel or the ferries charge these days for one day return tickets for a car transporter light truck plus a trailer that can carry an additional 2 cars. Three good parts cars would make it a worthwhile haul.

Lets face it, mechanical stuff is cheap and easy to transfer, rust repair and paint are expensive!

Bram
