Tacho Works Intermittently . Where Should I Start Looking? 200

Getting my wife's '88 240 ready to sell and in process of correcting problems.

The tacho can't make up its mind and works sporadically ie for part of every trip.

Thankyou in advance for all suggestions.

Take care,
John H from Downunder

Does the car have the dreaded mid-'80s insulation rot? Perhaps inside the wiring bundles? An intermittent short on that wire might give the same symptoms.

The tach wire runs directly from the coil lug to the tach. If all else fails, just run a new wire. If you wanna be polite, it should be red with a white stripe.

Thanks Bruce. Car doesn't have harness rot. Taking Dick's advice I cleaned the coil connection. Tacho seemed to work. Tomorrow's drive will be the test.

Check the spade that attataches to the coil. See if it is clean and tight. May also see if the wire is good at that end.
