93 940 torbo 'no spark'

Here is the latest....Using the onboard diagnostics I unpluged the RPM sensor and cranked the engine. It told me there was no RPM signal. I plugged it back in and it tested good. I checked the Radio suppresion relay and the coil is good, energized and I have 12 volts on both sides of the contact. Don Wilson's FAQ on basic operation of EZ117K led me to the ICU. I unplugged it and reseated the connector. Is there some way to test the ICU? Also, the next possible failure is called the power stage ignition amplifier. Where is this and how can I test it to see if that is the no spark cause. The ICU is ~ $150.00 and would like to know before I replace it if this is the problem. There is also lots of bad ECU info on the FAQ. Is this a possibility also? I have tried to purchase the Volvo service manual on the ignition but the Volvo web site says they are out of stock. Thanks for the help.

David

    93 940 torbo 'no spark'

I have a 940 SE and the power stage amplifer (EZ 116) is located on the dirver's side fender located almost directly above the battery terminal. There should be a connector with 5 wires coming out. There is nothing in the TSB on the LH 2.4 EZ116K I have about a Radio suppersion relay.

The power stage closes, breaking the power thruough the ignition coil. When the primary coil current is interrupted a high tension voltage of 30,000 to 35,000 volts is generated in the secondary coil. The high tension voltage is transmitted to the distributor and then to the spark plugs.

If the EZ117K is similar then you might check the ground at the intake manifold.
Hope this helps, let the board know what actually fixed the problem.
