Time for a Timing Belt? 200 1989

my ol' girl with 176k on her is lumpy on idle. acceleration and higher rpm she runs fine. only on idle she feels like she's missing. i've replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor and still, lumpy. what else can i check? thanks,

Clean the idle air valve, replace fuel filtres, and check the timing.

So that's what the plug is for! I don't recall it being mentioned in Haynes.

Over the years of 240 ownership I have picked up all kinds of info. Source of this one is lost. Remove rubber plug. Loosen tensioner nut, 17mm. Go a couple turns, then re-tighten. Easy part.

Tricky part is getting the rubber plug back in place. I have lost more than one down into the gravel pan, some never to be seen again. Try not to lose it inside the belt housing. Smear a little ATF on the part that goes inside the housing, and use a standard size flat tip screwdriver with care.
