Speedometer not working after crash 700 1988

After getting in a rear end collision so hard the car was totaled by my insurance Co. the instrument cluster fell out. I bought the car back and it is getting pulled out but the speedometer and odometer do not work any longer. If you play with the dimmer for the dash lights it will move up and down but not stay. Anyone out there have any ideas?? The car will be used by a new driver that is only 16 so in my opinion a speedometer is an important part of your car!

Thanks

You either have a problem with the sender on the rear axle being damaged by the collision or loose connections behind the instrument cluster. Most likely the sender is damaged. Sits towards the top of the differential housing attached to a cable. Check it out first.

Thought I'd let you know the wire that comes out of the rear end was damaged during the crash. Spliced it and good as new! Thanks for your help

Thanks, I'll look into the sender on the axle.
