bad carb 200

Now that i'm sure the engine is in sound condition i can start to figure out the idle hunting. It's not that bad at all, i'm just a little picky...
Anyway i think it is the carb that is worn. It had a bit of slack on the throttle shaft and you could also see that it wasn't sealing completely when closed. Could se light som places aroud the throttle plate. There was also some slack on the floating piston. I fugure i have 3 options.

1. Buy new carb, don't want that probably excpensive

2. Rebuild carb myself, i don't have access to machining facilities.

3. Buy used carb, risky don't know what i'll get?

If i go for option 3 what should i look out for? Can i use any of the constant depression carbs that came on 240's? Are some of them better than others? The one i have now is zenith 175CD

I just got a reconditioned carb (175 CD) from Rhys @ Island Automotion and am completely satisfied. Everthing worked as Rhys stated. Removed the old carb, bolted the new one on...voila. Started and idled from the get go! I tried to monkey with the adjustments but it idled smoothly and ran better that it ever did with his settings. I unequivocally recommend his rebuilds.

I have run the new carb for a week and am getting much better fuel economy and power. I also purchased the idle mixture adjutment tool (25 cdn) for future use. AS far as I can see the 175 CD works great and is easily adjusted with this tool and a blade screwdriver. The diaphrams cost $1.79 CDN and can be replaced in about five minutes. By sticking with your original carb you wont have to find any junkyard parts to adapt an SU.

Where can I find the idle adjustment tool you speak of. Is it a commonly available item? I have a zenith-stromberg I put aside because my spare SU was easily adjustable.

I'd go for a SU HIF6. They show up on ebay frequently, and are a great
deal easier to adjust than the ZS. Also DON'T have a diaphragm to get
    a hole in.

If you DO want to replace it:
FWIW, I am told that the Weber 36/36 DCD will work very well with the Volvo engines, even if it never came as standard with any Volvo (AFAIK). It is common enough to be found used. You would have to check if it will fit on your intake though. Yours is a B19A, right? Perhaps these guys will know: http://www.bccp.nl/uk/webergb.htm
If you find a good Weber but need an intake, they are available: http://www.pedersens-racing.no/forgassere.html

Of course, this alternative will empty your pockets more effectively than rebuilding or finding a direct replacement for your zenith would. You'd get a great-running car though!

There is one other option - send me your carb and I will rebuild it and make it perform like new. Far less than new (when actually available) and it will work the same. Check out http://members.shaw.ca/islandautomotion
Hunting or surging is caused by faults other than the throttle plate on the Stromberg.

A good advice. I had my dreaded Solex Cisac carb which was causing me lots of trouble rebuilt professionally, and it came back performing - like Rhys says - like new. If you are otherwise happy with your carb, this will most likely be the safest and in the long run most economical route to take.
