It's entirely possible to change this- although it would be a LOT less work to find another car and sell yours. There are a lot of 1980's Turbo automatics around, and relatively few equipped with an M46. I bet that you could even find someone here who would trade with you. Want my '88 non-turbo? Runs great!
Anyway, you would need the tranmission, obviously, and the AW71 is found in all 740 and 940 turbo models. You can use any year transmission. You will need the driveshaft from any 740 or 940 with the automatic. You can't use one from a 760 or 940SE with the multi-link rear axle.
You need a flywheel (flex plate) from an automatic equipped car.
You need the transmission cooler lines that go to the radiator, and if you get them from a 940 you need the little oil cooler as well.
You need a radiator that has the cooler fittings on it (yours may not have that).
You really should change the brake pedal and remove the clutch pedal and cable (although you would not have to do this- it would make it kind of interesting if anyone else drove the car).
And you should expect to spend at LEAST 8 hours doing the swap. If it's done in a shop, and you have all the pieces, maybe only 5 hours.... still a lot of money to spend on labor. Here, I'd expect this conversion to cost about $1200 if you paid a shop to do it, and bought used parts.
