okay, so at the beginning of the winter, my output shaft seal started to spit out some oil, and i figured it could hold out till summer so i could do the job, but it didn't. i ended up spending my day off in the snow on my driveway for three hours doing the job. job completed, no leaks, but because i was freezing so much, i neglected to realize i checked the wrong side of the tranny dipstick, and put too much fluid in. say about a quart or more. i ran it for about 2 days of regular in city driving with no problems (how happy i was) and after i checked for leaks, i was ecstatic. i decided to go for a little trip out of the city, and that's where the trouble started. i had problems shifting after about 2 hours of driving. i realized my mistake, and drained the excess oil. i thought i had the problem corrected, but it seems whenever i start up the car from cold, it won't shift until about 1-2 minutes of driving. after that, it's beautiful. one other thing bugs me. when i changed the seal and bushing, the fluid was almost black. that was brand new fluid i put in about 2 days earlier (going through a gallon of atf every 4 days). i asked a friend, and he said that happens when the clutches start to go. i asked another friend, and he said the problem shifting is becase all that fluid loosened "the bands" inside the transmission, and i have to tighten "the servo" to correct it. now what the hell am i supposed to do? and please, no remarks about what an idiot i am, as i am fully aware of my idiocy at the moment.
thanks

I am no expert, but I can tell you this: There are no "bands" in your transmission to go loose, and I would guess no servo to tighten either. These are terms from classic American three-speed automatics and your transmission is much different, using multi-plate clutch packs to engage the various ratios.

One guess is that your screen and/or filter are plugged with fine metal particles from the bushing failure. This would also explain the black fluid. Cleaning the screen and replacing the filter shouldn't cost too much at a garage if you don't feel up to another session on your back in the snow, and of course a fluid flush should be done.

My advice is to try all external (ie less expensive) approaches before agreeing to having your transmission replaced or dismantled. Very little ever goes wrong internally with these.

Well, you don't have to worry about adjusting your bands because this tranny doesn't have 'em. Could be time to replace the unit, though, if it's turning brand new fluid black in 2 days and having a hard time shifting. Course, as a last-ditch effort to save that tranny you could replace the standard tranny fluid with some redline. I've heard wonderful things about it, like how it cures broken transmissions. Good luck with it. (p.s.-I'm not really an expert but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents)

Sounds like the overfill didnt do to much damage, shouldnt have actually, normally it would just shoot it out the rear or another seal thats not tight, in your case you let it out before it found its way out, the black fluid was probly becauseyour tranny is dirty, and the late shifting is probly because you have that dirt in your valve body , additionaly fluid that is black is not nearly as slipery as ill say which would mean it has to heat up before anything can move, thus the ball's inside the valve body cant move till this point, if i was you id pull the pan, take the valve body out which has a billion screws holding it in, all of them are 10mm, drop that and all that excess black fluid will fall out when the valve body is dropped, replace the valve body, put pan back on fill up drive for around 50 miles drain fluid and fill it back up, the color should go back to normall, if it doesnt youre tranny discs are about to take a crap on you and that means a rebuild.
