price for engine 700

I have just totaled my '89 740 GLE NA. Unless I can sell it whole for parts, I will be parting it out. It has 39,000 original miles. How much is the engine worth? The ZF transmission?

Thanks in advance,
Dane Klaproth

Well, it usually runs about $2200 for a top-end engine rebuild after a broken timing belt incident.... so I'd figure a good running unbroken engine has to be worth at least half that.
The ZF transmission (are you sure?) is also a hard unit to find in good shape.
I thought all 16V cars had the Aisin-Warner AW72L but I guess I could be wrong.

If the shifter has "D321" on it, then it's a ZF22. If it's just "D21" like all the later ones, then it's an AW. Worth a few hundred either way, I guess.

I've heard BMW 735 owners will pay good money for a ZF, since the gearbox portion is the same as that trans.

That ZF is worth something to the BMW guys. The 5 and 7 series used ZF units and as we all know if reved in park or neutral after driving, you burn the clutches up immediatly. Might want to ask the guys on roadfly.org about this virgin tranny
