OT: follow up to moving to Florida, with a follow up question. 900 1994

Hi guys,
I made it. I left Chicago around 4am saturday and pulled into south florida around 9am sunday. All told the drive was uneventfull. My 940 handled the miles like nothing, these cars are very comfortable on the road. I did this drive solo, with only my scotty in the car as navigator. I didn't have a problem at all, just lots of coffee and a stop at a Tifton Georgia motel for a little sleep. I do have a follow up question for those of you that know south florida. I'm staying with relatives for the time being in Miramar, and I'm working at a lawfirm in downtown Miami, on Flager and s.e. 1st st. When I drove in for my interview, at 10am, I took 95 south the entire way that was hell it took me an hour and a half. For my follow up interview, I went turnpike south to 826 that took me an hour. That was a little better, but is there a better way? Anyone have a sure fire route that will cut my travel time down a bit, hopefully alot. Thanks for the help guys.

Michael

Glad you made it Mike. My parents used to live in Pembroke Pines, so I know the area well, and still get over there from Tampa on occasion..as Chris mentioned, the Palmetto Expresway, or 27th avenue are about the only routes...still an hour at best. You might try going in REAL early...like 0630, if they'll let you..much nicer in the Summer...which will tax your cooling system...you'll want a 3 row METAL radiator, and 170 degreee thermostat...our cars weren't made for the tropics, after all. WELCOME!...and don't forget the Volvo meet in Naples (only 90 mins from Miramar) on March 22nd..I'll buy you a beer...Dennis

Welcome to wonderful south Florida. I used to live in Miami Lakes and commute south to Coral Gables. I am now living and working up in Fort Lauderdale/Sunrise.

The highways can be packed and no fun at all. I would usually take the surface roads during rush hour. To get to where you are going, these are you options:

If you are in west Miramar, take I-75 down to where is meets the Palmetto, but get on the Gratigny going east. Then take either 27th, 22nd, or 7th Avenue going south. These have lights but usually the traffic is faster than the highways.

If you are in east Miramar, it might be easier to get to the Turnpike and go south the the Golden Glades, or get on Flamingo or University (which turns into 27th Avenue in Miami-Dade). From the Golden Glades, get on SR9 going south instead of I-95. This is basically 7th Avenue.

Otherwise, you can go east at anytime to get on US 1 (Biscayne) and take it all the way down to downtown.

No matter how you crack it, it is going to be a good hour or more to get down there.

My advice, if you can afford it, find a place in the Brickell area near down town and cut you commute to nothing. It may be overpriced, but your peace of mind not sitting in traffice is worth it. There are alot of older homes just south west of downtown that would be good too.

Let me know if you have any questions about the area. I know most of it like the back of my hand.
