My auxillary drive belt tensioner emmits a 'squeaking/chirping' sound and seems to have a a nervous jitter , like the belt is bumpy. I just had the timing belt replaced approx 2k ago. It is most noticiable while the engine is warming up.

I can place some pressure on the tensioner by hand and the squeaking ceases. I've also carefully sprayed WD40 inside it and the squeaking ceases for a couple of days, only to return. I'm not sure if this can be rebuilt (are there any bearings inside?). I am a little nervous about dissassembly if I cannot get it back together properly.

Anyone hae this dilema and care to share suggestions on fixing this problem? I'm amazed at the costly replacement of this little item!

Replace it. Check several of the displayed vendors, FCPgrotten.com, RPRUSA.com and others. Put on a new serp. belt as well.

So it cannot be repaired? I'd like to repair it if possible. It seems a shame to throw this part away if it CAN be repaired.

What is an estimate of replacement cost via on-line vendor as opposed to Volvo Parts counter?

I wouldn't mess with repairing it. I saw one post of how the serpentine belt broke and then somehow got sucked under the timing belt cover and broke timing belt, mashing the valves. At that point you would be begging to pay the $50 or whatever for a new tensioner.

The cost @ the Volvo parts counter was OVER $100.00!!! Where can I purchase one for $50.00?

Common failure on 850s. We used to replace a lot of these tensioners in the shop. They do exactly what you describe. Every car in the world that uses serpentine belts has problems with these things. At least the Volvo ones don't FALL APART like the Chryslers I've seen.
NO fix I know of. You may be able to come up with something once you have it out in your hands.
