Dave,
This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Could use a few details about which model we're talking about here. You answer our questions, we'll try to answer yours.
1) Turbo or non turbo?
2) 16V (that would be a 740GLE) or normal 8-valve?
3) Bosch or Regina fuel injection (if your coil looks like a soda can, it's Bosch- if it looks like a cube with aluminum fins, it's Regina)
4) Any recent work done to the car?
5) Have you taken any steps to isolate the problem?
6) DOes it idle well, start up fine, run ok except for full throttle?

I would start by looking for vacuum leaks to rule that out. Excess air gives basically the same results as insufficient fuel. Make sure no hoses are off, and the large rubber intake air hose(s) are all intact, no holes.

Have a fuel pressure test done. You could have a plugged filter, or a bad in-tank fuel pump. The main pump could also be failing, but the in-tank or pre-pump will starve the main pump for fuel if it goes bad. Another symptom of this would be that it's worse with 1/2 tank or less of gas. The fuel pressure regulator could also be bad, not uncommon.

As with any running problem, you should always check out the ignition parts: distributor cap, rotor, wires, and most importantly spark plugs. IF it's been a few years, replace the plugs.

After all that, it gets a bit more involved- your car has a check engine light that allows you to read codes if there are any stored. See the 700FAQ.
One thing I can think of that could cause this is a bad knock sensor. But I'd be more likely to suspect the fuel delivery than this.
Good luck!

Rob, a few Q's..... 700 1990

In the olden days, with carbies and vacuum advance thingies on the distributor, those symptoms would jive with a failure of the vacuum advance. Especially if mashing the gas pedal caused an instant reaction.

Not to 2nd guess your advice. And, none of my cars have had the vacuum line to the ICM fail, yet. Just a thought.

Another Q - what is the translation to your sig line??????

Regards,

Bob

See iof you have a leak in one of the vacume lines. sometimes you get on the gas and the line will collapse because of the leak therefore no air gets in. D-
