240t oil temp & pressure gauge in a 745t? 700 1988

There's a couple of 240turbos at a local salvage yard and I'd like to take the oil temp and pressure guages (and senders) and install them in my '88 745t. Other than finding a place to put them, are the sensors compatible with the B230FT? And just where on the 240's block will I find them?

Thanks,

You'll need a 1/8-27NPT to 14mmX1.5 adapter for the oil pressure sender; I got one, branded Sunpro, in a bag of misc. adaptors at my local auto parts store.

Would that adapter be the same as going from an older to newer 240 engine installation. I have an 89 wagon and bought a sender and guage on ebay but the sender is a smaller diameter(older?) than the engine block on my 89? I haven't taken the OEM sender out to check the size myself.

Thanks,

Same thing. Your '89 has a b230, just like a 745, and ALL RWD Volvos post-1985.

Ok, not all. All 4 cylinder RWD Volvos after 1985 have a B230.

Pretty much.

One warning:

The oil pressure sender on the B21FT won't work.

In the transition between the B23 and B230 engines, the oil pressure sender port was changed from NPT to metric threads.

But you more than likely don't want to risk a used sender anyhow. www.egauges.com has a proper metric sender, around $30.

Also of note: 240 gauges are the standard 52mm diameter. www.mvpvolvo.com sells an a-pillar gauge pod for such gauges.

Oil pressure sender will be on the right front of the engine, where the oil pressure switch screws in (over the alternator on a 240, over the PS pump on a 740.) The oil temp sender is normally a threaded brass plug that goes in place of the oil drain plug. Probably should grab it's wiring as well if you can get it out. Keep in mind the junkyard may not appreciate you draining the engine oil on the ground. Good luck hunting!

Thanks. I'll look for this next time I go. I'll also take a container to drain the oil into.

While the yard is supposed the drain the oil out the the engines, transmission and rear ends it doesn't always happen. EPA rules require them to do that and pump the R12 out. If the yard catches you removing an engine pan, transmission pan, or differential cover, you will get asked to not come back.

Thanks for the tip. I'll ask before doing anything like that. The few engines I've checked have not been drained btw.

I saw that one too. If I can make this work cheaply I'll post the results.
