Glass polish for cloudy glass Euro headlight lens?

I love my new Euro headlights, but Mr. Anal Retentive noticed that one lens seems a bit cloudy compared to the other. I've never tried glass polish before. Does anybody think this will help?

Thanks much!

This might sound funny. I am in construction. When we have glass problems (minor scratches or slight imperfections) we use TOOTHPASTE. Try it, at least it will not cost you too much.

    Hi Mike,
Could it be that it's just dirty on the inside? The housing and the glass is just held together by clips and can be taken apart for servicing.

Hi Erling. Good to hear from you again.

I didn't notice any clips holding the glass to the reflector housing of my Euros. It looks like a glue or spackle is holding the glass to the reflector. (Maybe the ones for the later 240s have clips.) Actually I ended up with two sets of Euros. I took the glass off of one with a corroded reflector in hopes of cleaning it. The glass was held with white spackle or glue which I had to dig out with a screwdriver. I haven't reassembled them yet.

I'm hoping that the glass is dirty on the outside so I won't have to go through the trouble of digging the glue out and regluing it together. But if that is what it takes, so be it.

Nice Web site by the way. Very nice pictures. One of these days I'm going to replace the foam in my seat. I'll use your info as a reference.

        Mike,
Things like this can be a bit difficult to comment, as there may always be different specifications for different markets. Over here, I believe the headlights were basically identical for the 1981-93 models. I think that the parts # for glass, housing and reflectors are the same for these years, and only the trim changed for the 1986-93 models.

I just had a look at a spare light (1981-85) I have disassembled, and it is just a rubber gasket between glass and housing. There are a number of clamps surrounding the rim, one of them is actually also the stopper for the wiper.

I'm not sure, but seem to have picked up that the US models did not have the bumper change in '81 as we did. If this is correct, perhaps the '84 lamps are different too. On the other hand, could the white stuff have been put in by the PO? If there is a recess in the housing perhaps you could replace it with the rubber gasket. I'd be happy to help with pictures if you're interested.

Thanks for your kind comments re. my new web site!

        Erling.

It's possible that the previous owner put in the glue to seal the glass to the reflector. But on all four lights I have, I didn't notice any provisions for clips, at least nothing obvious anyway. Oh, well. At least I have awesome Euro lights!
