Died while moving - won't restart - basic diagnostics? 200 1987

Hope this hasn't been beat to death - searching the site I could only find FAQs for the 700/900 series.

1987 240 DL, 4 cyl., fuel injection. The car was stalling on rare occassion while moving and gas additive seemed to help. Yesterday the car stalled while moving and will not restart. I have a good spark at the distributor cap but that's about the limit of my diagnostic skills. What's the next logical step(s) to identifying the problem? I don't want to pay for a repair if I can possibly avoid it.

Thanks for your recommendations and advice.

Paul

Died while moving - won't restart - basic diagnostics?

XC70 has died 3 times while driving. Very unnerving when it has occurred on a quick moving 2 lane highway. Volvo Dealer does not have an answer.

Hi -

Get a 30-amp inline weatherproof fuse holder with pigtails at Radio Shack. Has #12 or #10 gauge wire and runs under $4.00. Solder it in and cover the solder joints with shrink tubing. If that's not the problem, well, you were going to need to do that anyway, eventually.

If nothing works, and you are out in the "Old West", get out the .44 magnum and shoot the s.o.b. between the headlights. HoHo

Good Luck,

Bob

1) Fuel pump relay. Up under the right side of dashboard, behind glovebox, against firewall. Replace or re-solder. $40 from Volvo, $14 aftermarket.

2) The good old fuseholder. Right behind the battery. About $3. Remove battery cable while playing with it and keep an eye on the metal clip- it likes to fly away and disappear.

3) If none of that helps, the main fuel pump may have died and you'll have to get under, and get covered in gas if you want to change it yourself.

Actually the FAQ section on the engine will serve you well since both types have the same engine.

Since it's an '87, look at the wiring harness ground wires on the intake manifold. If the insulation is off, there is a good chance that's the reason.

Next check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull off the vacuum line and smell for gas. If so, bad regulator and it's flooding.

Resolder the fuel pump relay under the passenger side dash on the right side of the console.

Check back in.

I had a similar experience in my 1987 245. It turned out to be a deteriorated fuel injection main power fuse holder. This is located near the battery and is an inline blade style fuse (10 amp i think) on a big (12gauge?) wire. I shook it around and my car started. You can find a cheap high quality weather proof replacement from a car stereo shop! Good luck......

PS. this is a tip straight out of the IPD catalog that saved my butt on the bay bridge!

. . . blade style fuse (10 amp i think) . . .
That's a 25 amp fuse, and it's a good place to start. Also, check all electrical connections you can get your hands on, including the main fuse block inside the car next to the driver's left foot. Be careful with the main engine wiring harness, it's a delicate thing. (re: token ring man's reference to crumbly insulation)

Good diagnosis. I recommend all 240 owners replace this fuseholder. It's a 25 amp fuse, usually 10 gauge wire. Cheapest insurance I've seen yet.

Thanks Warren & T 200 1987

Thanks guys. I copied your replies and a good chunk of material from the FAQs. It may take a week, but I'll get back to you with the fix.

Your help is appreciated,

Paul
