The black box 140 style filter is on a car I just picked up this evening. I seem to recall some discussion about this style filter fitting on SU carbs.
Some Canadian 120 cars came with it. Hope I got the right message board?

Yes - that's a 140 filter box on a 122. It's sort of pointless unless the intake hose is poked forward through the front 'bulkhead' into the cool air, instead of picking up the hotter air in the engine compartment.

That's not just a 140 style air filter housing (...nothing wrong with that), but that's a 140 style dual-throttle manifold...that thing should be recycled!

It does have HS6's instead of HIF6's, where the B20 was never offered (AFAIK) with the HS6.

I'd sure hope those secondary throttle valves are blocked open (or had the throttle plates removed).

I've seen quite a few 144's here in thailand with B20's and HS6... but never seen one with that type of a cast manifold...

It may have been particular to the US market, I'm not sure. At idle the intake mixture is taken through a longer, warmer path through the center of the intake manifold. This path is short-circuited when the accellerator is opened and the secondary throttle valves open, when the intake manifold acts pretty much like a regular one. I -think- the warmed intake mixture improved emissions somehow, as the tests back then were all administered at idle only.

It does a couple of things:

It speeds warm ups, prevents icing on the carbs, and prevents fuel
from pooling on the manifold. I think the emissions aspects are only
a small part of the setup.

I don't really care for the design, but I live in a very warm climate
and all my cars have the cast iron manifolds and I've never had trouble
with hot starts that couldn't be cured by putting the mixture, idle and
points in order.
