Clean sediments from Transmisson 200

While the transmission filter on Volvo 240s doesn't really 'clog' it would be wise to drop the pan. The filter itself is more of a 'screen' rather than a filter, but it would be wise to inspect it for large trapped particles.

More importantly, the transmission pan tends to collect a lot of sediment as the transmission clutchs slowly wear. There is a magnet in the pan to collect these (very fine) metal particles, but it is significantly under-powered to do the job. You'll probably find a magnet that's completely covered in 'metalic sand' and then some sediments coating the bottom of the pan. These can be wiped out with a clean rag. Be sure to clean the magnet and re-install it.

The rubber transmission pan gasket is available at almost any parts store (Napa has a good one for about $3.25). They also sell a kit for $14 that includes both the rubber gasket and the filter.

If you wish to remove the filter for inspection/cleaning, there are 2 small gaskets that will need to be replaced when you do so (the filter is held off the transmission by a spacer block and this is why 2 filter gaskets are needed). These gaskets can not be ordered by themselves, except from a dealership, which will charge you about $4 each.

I am unsure if the filter gaskets are included with the Napa filter kit, I would assume so, but I don't know for sure. I've never purchased the 'kit' since the filter is usually just fine and it takes little effort to clean a metal screen. Be advised, the original filter gaskets were compressed felt and will probably break or crack when you remove them (should you decide to remove the filter).

Good luck and God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

My most recent discovery 200

Life just keeps on getting better and better the more I learn. I mentioned earlier this week that I always work on a drop cloth now. In the last few days I've found another little thing that makes life nicer. Mechanics' gloves. The pair I have are called "Mechanix". These things are pretty good. I have found that I can do a lot of things with them on that I have always had to do barehanded in the past. Some of the things that are hard to do while wearing these gloves? Skin knuckles. Pinch fingers. Lacerate fingertips. Ingrain grease. Some of the tougher guys around here might scoff, but if I wear these while I work on something dirty I don't have to do dishes for a week to get my hands clean again.
