Trailer Ball Orientation? Sorry!! 200

Just installed the DrawTite hitch onto my 93 245. Osphoed and repainted flat black. Now to search for the tongue. I have seen a curved one and a flat one available. IPD shows the curved one in their catalogue. If I get this style, which way does the curve go? I've observed other pickemups here in Texas with the curve up. Would this be true for Volvo's also? Any thoughts from experienced trailer haulers??
Thanks,
el Raidman

it's all about the trailer 200

Trailers are hardly universal. If you have a trailer with a flat floor, put a level on the floor and see what height the tongue wants to be. Then you can determine at what height your ball needs to be.

The Volvo ball hitch should be the straight one. The reason the trucks have the curved variety is because the hitch mounting location on a pick-up is so high that the actual hitch point, i.e. the ball, must be dropped a bit so that the trailer is pulled as level as possible. If the truck used a straight shaft, the trailer would ride at a high angle which would throw the balance off, cause it to fishtail maybe, etc. On the other hand, the hitch mounts much lower on a Volvo, so you need a straight shaft. A "curved" shaft (which is used to off-set and lower the ball) would place the hitch point much too low.

Yep. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. I have towed everything from boats to utility trailers and have had hitches on three 240's and a 740. So, I know the straight shaft is the correct one. A difference might be that all the hitches I have used were OEM Volvo hitches v. the smaller ipd variety. I have never used a non-Volvo hitch.

BTW, Volvo's really do a good job towing, esp. wagons.
