Who has done a AW-71 Valve body Repair? What where the results. 700

Hi All,
Here's the scenario. OD is intermittant. See my previous posts for all the things tried, including completely bypassing the electrical to the solienoid. Solenoid was replaced. Most times when it worked it took a speed of 55 65 to get it to kick in. Occasionally when it started working, it would work for the rest of the trip.

I just reajusted the kickdown this morning loosening it more, but I'm going to be surprised if I see any results with the OD.

I keep hearing references to wear down of some of the check balls in the valve body and I'm wondering if perhaps this is where I am. 130 K on the car. Whould the external pressure check help confirm that?

I have a friend who is a transmission guy by profession and would get him to do it. I have rebuilt Warner Marine transmissions, but they dont have all those balls and springs. As we get older , hopefully, we get smarter?

tthe car shifts fine except for the OD and perhaps a power flush might be in order first. Although several folks have said," just replace the transmission, they are cheap", I am concerned about getting a worse one than I have now, for all that work.

your thoughts???

Regards
From the sunny coat of NC

Woody

Read your previous post. As I recall the current draw was 10 to 11 amps!

its actually pretty easy, as long as that your problem and its not the discs inside damaged, i rebuilt my valve body on a 70L which is pretty much exactly the same. Just make sure you give them the exact model number off the tranny casing i did a rebuild on three different volvo transmisssions all AW series 2 were the same model and i didnt notice they had different model serial numbers and the parts were different.

Hi,
Who did you use for part sources and what specific service manuals did you use. My transmission buddy lent me a manual that I think was from one of the sources listed here in the FAQ, but It doesn't say much about the valve assembly.

FWIW, Volvo has a very detailed manual for the AW-71 that includes excellent instructions on rebuilding the valve body. It is entitled "Reconditioning Automatic Transmission AW70/70L AW71/71L AW72L" Part number is TP 31635/1 and is a different manual than that listed in the FAQ. It has excellent diagrams and step by step instructions. It does not list part numbers, however. It is available from the usual source.

Did not read your previous posts but if you have not performed a flush return to go. That is a normal maintenance procedure. I went around circles with my intermittent OD even direct wire to solonoid, removal and cleaning of solonoid. Finally I flushed using synthetic ATF, the results were instant, perfect OD and as well it corrected a delayed shift problem 2nd to third.

Your transmission at 130K is a baby unless it's been abused. Not even sure if valve body balls have anything to with the OD in any event. Flush it first! Do that yourself using the FAQ procedure.

H David,

I did the flush last winter, Disconnected at the (radiator)cooler ran 8-10 Qts through it. That did not seem to make any difference.

I could kick my self for throwing away my old solenoid, the other day, because I could have cut a grove in the face of it, between the two ports and ended all questions about solenoids and or current.

Ah Well,
Think I'll check my local Junk yard. It seemed to me if you had readings from 2 amps to 8-10 amps that the higher reading might indicate a malfunction. On the other hand, if the draw is only 1-2 amps , why is volvo using the relay? (to turn on the light?) see what happens when you think to much?

Regards

Stay tuned

Woody

Cannot remember the exact amps but it was defintely a higher value than 2 amps. Actually It was 10 or 11 as I think about it. Would be happy to measure it on my 88 740 and let you know.

David,

If it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate it if you could measure the draw.
