clutch alignment tool 700 1990

Can anyone tell me the dimensions for a clutch alignment tool for the B230.
I`m sure the pilot bearing end is 15mm but I`m not sure what diameter of round shaft would fit through the splines in the plate.
I know I can order one from the likes of IPD, but as I have the use of a lathe and some bar stock I can make one in 1/2 hour at work, and for nothing!
Any help much appreciated.
Colin.

Measurements on the clutch tool I got in my "kit" ...

Starting at the pilot end, it starts out at 12mm, tapering out to 14mm in 2mm distance (so it slopes). The 14mm segment for the pilot goes for 25mm, then tapers out to 22mm in 4mm (slopes too). This 22mm segment is the splines, which goes on for 43mm.

There are 22 splines.

No need for a tool, just eyeball the position of the clutch.
Worked for me.

Mikael,
Thanks for your reply, but since I last posted on this a complete clutch kit came up on the UK E-Bay site which I got for £26 ($42 US)
Should arrive tomorrow so I can now measure it and I will post the design of the tool here when I`ve done so. (possibly an iclusion for the FAQs ?)
Colin.

Thanks Mikael,
I have been doing this for years on literally dozens of clutches but just occasionally it doesn`t work, and then the struggling starts.
This time I thought that, given for once the rare luxury of forward planning I would do it the easy way!
Colin.

Maybe I was just lucky, that was my first clutchjob ... :-)

Yes, 9 times out of ten you will be OK but then one day you wind up with a very heavy, and rapidly getting heavier! gear box above your head, struggling to get it to engage in the splines and pilot bearing and wishing fervently that you hadn`t done it that way!

Thanks, but there are two reasons for not doing this.

1:- Trans is still in car!

2:- It still wouldn`t work because the size I need is the diameter of a plain
round bar which would fit inside the splines in the plate as
most of these tools do, ie. tool has no slines on it, unlike the one that
IPD list.

I`m not planning on doing the clutch yet, so haven`t got a plate to hand either.
Just trying to be prepared for when I do have to do it.
Failing this will revert to using the old Mk 1 eyeball method!
Colin.
