Alternator Mounting Question 200

'81 Turbo, going through the engine compartment, replacing this and that. I took the alternator out to check the brushes and replace the mount bushings and had a question. Should there be a washer under the bolt for the pivoting adjustment arm? It didn't have one when I took it off and the bushing was pretty chewed up. I'm wondering if this is just the age of the bushing (it looked original) and if a washer would protect the new one a bit better.

The new wiring harness goes in tomorrow!

Thanks,

    Alternator Mounting Question 200

I put big washers on mine just to make myself feel better... ;-) I replaced these on a 320i I had once with some nylon bushings, dealer said they'd never wear out...

    Alternator Mounting Question 200

As I recall, the shape of a new bushing has a sort of built-in washer on one end. The center metal tube protects it. Those poor babies do wear out, three for the alternator and four for the p/s pump are worth it.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
