What sealer for kickpanel vent?

I'm about to install a kickpanel vent from a 240 into my 140. What is the proper sealer to use? what's in there now looks like some sort of gray putty.

I've used that black rubber rope that's sticky as heck. It's sold in coils and is marketed as a windshield placement sealer. Just grab off a hunk about the right length as the circumference of the vent plate, screw the plate in and that mashes the dum-dum down.
