alternator lost?

I suppose that doesn't literally mean the thing is MIA? Not present at all?

Since I am not able to replace diodes and alternator bearings, failure of those things are the only reasons I would consider putting in another unit. The usual failure is worn out brushes and/or belts. Either of those is way less costly than another alternator.

If you go for the new unit, consider replacing all three of the rubber mounting bushings. Worn bushings allow the belt to get out of alignment.

Good Luck,

Bob

Yes you can buy an 740 alternator belt at a local parts store. (Autozone etc.) It should run less than ten bucks. You might consider replacing your other drive belts as well. A couple of good online source for Brick parts are fcpgroton.com or importpartsspec.com ... low prices ... good parts & service at both. Good luck.
