Gas leak, very small, can't find 89 244DL n/a 200

Hey all,

I have a gas leak somwhere in my car. It has to be very very small because I never find any gas on the ground making any spots. The leak just makes the car stink of gasoline every now and then. I have no idea where to get started to find it.

Thanks in advance!
Trevor

In addition to what Stoney said, get in the trunk! Pull up the carpet. On the left side, there's an access panel with 2 screws. Under it are the vent line, pressure line, and a plugged fitting at the top of the tank sender. Be careful with all these- the steel lines are usually really rusty. The plug could have come off, or a vent line could be split. I think you'd find the leak quickly if it was on the pressure side. Anyway if lines are cracked, replace them. If anything is not in good shape, it really should be replaced soon. I just had to put a new tank sender in the '87... all rusted and I couldn't be sure it was safe. When you're all finished under there, apply a little caulk to the access panel. IF it's sealed up well, no smell should get in the car.

Good luck & hope you find it soon!

Look in the trunk, right side at the gas filler pipe. There is a small vent hose that comes off the bottom just inside the fender. Its a small diameter hose that slides inside a rubber neck and can pop off. Slide it back in and route it out thru the hole in the bottom of the storage bin behind the wheel. Use a clamp or spring clip (like the ones used to clip paper together) to hold the hose in the rubber sleeve.
