steering wheel is locked and key will not turn 900 1993

I feel very stupid but for some reason I cannot get the key to turn in my 93 960. Is there something simple I need to do to unlock the steering wheel column thus allowing my key to turn from the lock position. I have read the manual and cannot find anything. I am lost as to what to do 0 - I have tried to release the wheel but for now my car is sitting in a parking lot. Thanks.

Did you try turning the steering wheel slightly while you turn the key? This would remove pressure from the latch, and allow the key to pull the latch into the unlocked position.

Yes, try turning the wheel with some force till it pops free... and then the key should turn. This is VERY common in my experience.

There's also the sitution where everything gets locked up... and the shifter might get locked and not budge. In that case try pushing in that button on the shifter housing base in the back. It's a mechanical release that frees the whole system. You have to really push it hard.
