safety discovery 200 1985

While cleaning my Volvo the other day I noticed a little metal thing next to the door lock (on the door)on the car side. You can move the little switch up & down, about one inch distance. When it is pushed down you cannot open the door from the inside, but can open from outside. Move it back up & return to normal. I have a four year old, I feel better now while driving. For your information.

Hugh, Sr.

    Child safety Locks

The first time I saw them was on an 1986 Toyota Corrola my parents owned. Since that time I have bought my Volvos and have found them on them.

I find it amazing that the big three waited until the early 90's to start using them. My freind has a 1994 Lumina that does not have this feature. When the 1991 Caprice (upside-down bathtub) came out one of its "selling points" was the addition of Child safety Locks. Insert Sarcastic Remark here.

I think you should either purchase and read, or read your owner's manual and discover all of the interesting details these cars incoporate. There is lots more to them to know.

      All owner's manuals are available on-line back to 1985 200 1985

You can view your original owner's manual on-line from the Owners' Circle Area of the Volvo North America website. To log on you first need to register your vehicle (it's free).

Click on "Site Map" and then on "Owners' Manual Archive" under "Volvo Library". Select your year and model to bring up the full colour owner's manual in HTML format. There's lots of other good stuff on this site, so spend some time poking around.

    Yes!!!

You have discovered the child safety lock and yes that is it's technical name. That is a feature that dates back to the 60's along with numerous other items that have only recently become standard equipment for other manufacturers.

Am I alone in laughing whenever I see commercials on TV from manufacturers extolling the safety and comfort features of their cars that have been in use by Volvo and others for 30 years??? My god, a commercial I saw recently had GM trying to convince us they invented everything from the very thought of safety to the modern highway...

    My rant is over...

    Hugh,

Was it just on the rear door locks? Or fronts too?

I think?? they are called safety locks. My 88 Jetta had them too (rear only). My guess is that other cars have them too.
