Rear springs & shocks 700 1991

Can bad rear shocks cause a difference in side to side height in the rear end?
I just changed the rear springs on my 91-740T wgn. The problem was a side to side difference of approx. 1 inch. The ground to top wheel well height difference side to side (w/ the new springs) is 660mm vs 680mm. The unloaded height of the old springs are identical to the new spring heights. I see no bent or severely corroded mounting parts. Any ideas?

The shocks shouldn't have any effect on your rear ride height.

Are both springs seated the same way at the bottom? I know there's a tab on the trailing arm that can 'catch' the bottom of the spring when you're raising the suspension, which keeps the spring from seating properly... I had to fiddle with that some when I swapped springs recently.

If you really want to test this out, you switch the new springs side-to-side to see the results.

FWIW, on my wagon, the ride height in the back was the same on both side with old springs & new; in the front, the passenger side is 1/2" higher than the driver's side... new springs coming soon.

My '84 244 was like that and so is my '90 745T. I'm not sure if it has to do with the fuel tank. It is probably more related to the solid axle suspension geometry and how it is affected by the panhard rod. My guess only...

I have a 91-940T wgn also. Same axle/configuration. It is level front to back & side to side. Similiar mileage.

If it's 20mm lower on the driver's side, maybe it's partially because the fuel tank is full??

Hi Chris: The fuel tank was less than 1/4 full.
