Terable Sound under the hood Please Read 700

it's Realy hard to pin down where this sound is someing from, it kinda sounds like the "vacume pump" for the brakes? it's in the haynes manual on page 206.
any how maby it's the water pump
it's like a Lond squeek but deeper in tone/pitch and it seems to only happen every 1 rpm or so, the ater pump was replaced less than a year ago but it was a Reman pump and you never know.... Please any one if u have a thought or sugestion. i have to take a long drive in less than a month and i'm realy low on $ so, a shop isent an option. it's a 85 760 GLE with the V6 and autotranny

thanks in advance, Gary

sounds like you have the beginnings of a cam going away, can you identify if the sound is coming out of the valve covers? you referred that you thought the vaccum pump. that is mounted on the drivers side valve cover. why dont you remove it and make temporary cardboard cover to seal it off and start the motor , see if the sound goes away, if it does, you have a bad vacuum pump, if not maybe you can tell better that the sound is from inside the motor.

Your description is a bit hard to understand but maybe you are decribing the sound of a belt squeeking. You do need to isolate the sound. Use 3 0r 4 ft length of hose or tubing held to the ear and pass the other around at suspected spots.

If you spray a bit of water on a belt and the sound goes away for a few seconds you can isolate to a particular belt.

looking in under the hood the sounds seems to be comeing from the in/on the engine on the right hand side twards the back. i was just stateing that i Could be wrong. and it Could be some thing like the water pump. thanks guys

I would buy a cheap brand of belt dressing and spray the belts to eliminate them as the cause. If its the water pump, major costs if it seizes on your trip. Usually water pumps sound more like "ball bearings in a tin can".

that's not a lot of miles for most volvos, but that early model v6 is known to have oiling problems, causing the camshafts to fail prematurely...good luck.
